Once, the Hawaiian Islands were called the “Sandwich Islands”.

The name is given by James Cook (1728-1779), famous British explorer and navigator. He rediscovered Hawaii Islands on January 18^th 1 778, on his third expedition into the Pacific.

Captain Cook named the “Sandwich Islands” after his supporter and superior officer John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich.

Captain James Cook was killed on 14^th February 1779 on Hawaii.

The name “Sandwich Islands” was retained throughout 19^th century.
