What Was The Earlier Name Of The Hawaiian Islands?

The Hawaiian Islands are situated in the Pacific Ocean. “Hawaii” is the name of the largest island of all.

Once, the Hawaiian Islands were called the “Sandwich Islands”.

The name is given by James Cook (1728-1779), famous British explorer and navigator. He rediscovered Hawaii Islands on January 18th 1 778, on his third expedition into the Pacific.

Captain Cook named the “Sandwich Islands” after his supporter and superior officer John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich.

Captain James Cook was killed on 14th February 1779 on Hawaii.

The name “Sandwich Islands” was retained throughout 19th century.
