The world acre had originally meaning „open field“. Today, acre means unit of area in various system of measures. The most used acres are the survey acre and international acre.
How big is acre? One acre has 4.840 square yards or 43.560 square feet. We can say it in at other way: 1 acre is equal to 4,046.8564224 square meters, or 1 acre is equal to 0.40468564224 hectare. This is international acre system of measures. The survey acre, or better known as United States survey acre is equal to 4,046.87261 square meters, or 1 survey acre is equal to 0.404687261 hectare.
Some other acres are: Scottish acre, Irish acre, Cheshire acre (10,240 square yards), Roman acre (1,260 square meters) and God’s Acre used in a sense of churchyard.
